Alkali Resistant Sight Glass: Solution for Crude Glycerine Corrosion

CASE STUDY: MALAYSIA

Are you searching for a durable alkali resistant sight glass for your oleochemical process?

This week, our engineering team received an urgent inquiry from a prominent plant in Malaysia. They were facing a recurring maintenance nightmare: their standard windows were failing rapidly. While standard borosilicate glass is excellent for thermal shock, it often struggles in the harsh environment of Crude Glycerine extraction.

The client’s maintenance engineer wrote to us describing the critical issue:

“We are looking for a material that is better than borosilicate glass for long term usability… we had abrasion issues from our previous glass…

Production Data:
Medium: Crude Glycerine + Salts
Temperature: 180°C
pH Level: 14 (Strong Alkali)
Pressure: 10 Bar / Vacuum”

Why Borosilicate Fails at pH 14

At pH 14 and 180°C, the silica network (SiO₂) in standard glass begins to dissolve. The “abrasion” the Malaysian team experienced wasn’t just physical wear; it was likely Chemical Etching (Caustic Attack). To solve this, upgrading to a specialized alkali resistant sight glass is mandatory to prevent dangerous thinning and “clouding”.

The Solution: Gen-2 Mica Glass

We proposed a direct replacement using our
Gen-2 Alkali-Resistant Mica Glass
(Custom size: 170x20mm).

Unlike standard glass, this material is fortified with Zirconium Oxide (ZrO₂) (~6%) and Rare Earth Oxides. The Zirconium creates a protective barrier that prevents hydroxyl ions from breaking down the glass matrix, making it the ideal choice for caustic environments.

Comparison: Standard vs. Gen-2 Solution

Feature Standard Borosilicate 3.3 Lumiglas Gen-2 (Alkali Resistant)
Alkali Resistance (pH 14) Poor (Rapid etching) Excellent (Target Design)
Max Service Temp ~280°C 600°C
Protective Composition None (Pure Silica Network) ZrO₂ (Zirconium) Reinforced
Best Application Acids, Water, Steam Crude Glycerine, Caustic Soda

For oleochemical plants processing crude glycerine, soap noodles, or biodiesel, upgrading to a verified alkali resistant sight glass transforms a monthly maintenance headache into a long-term reliable solution.

FAQ

Q: Can I use this glass for acidic environments?
A: No. This material is specialized for high pH (8-14). For strong acids, stick to borosilicate.
Q: How long does it last in 180°C Sodium Hydroxide?
A: While service life varies by flow rate, Gen-2 typically lasts months compared to days for standard glass.
