The LUMIGLAS® Type 76 fused sight glass is a metal-fused borosilicate observation disc. Specifically, Lumiglas manufactures it to DIN 7079 and DIN 7080, engineering it perfectly for welding neck flange assemblies to DIN 28121. During production, Lumistar heats the borosilicate glass insert and the metal ring together until the glass flows against the ring surface. Afterward, the assembly undergoes a controlled precision cooling phase. Consequently, this process holds the glass insert in permanent compressive stress. Ultimately, this mechanical prestress gives the Type 76 its defining safety advantage over conventional thermally toughened sight glass discs.

Which ring material should I select for corrosive service?

Initially, for aggressive acids and oxidising media, choose Hastelloy C-22 (2.4602). Alternatively, for chloride-rich or halogenated environments, Hastelloy C-276 (2.4605) delivers the highest chemical resistance. Meanwhile, for general corrosive service and offshore applications, Duplex Stainless Steel (1.4462) remains the standard choice. Ultimately, when in doubt, provide Lumistar with your process medium details and our engineers will recommend the exact correct ring material.

What does the * marking mean in the dimension table?

Essentially, the * symbol indicates that we have verified the d1 dimension at 40 bar per applicable approval documentation. Furthermore, all other dimensions follow the standard DIN 28121 size series, and we supply them without restriction. Additionally, for non-standard dimensions or pressures above 40 bar, please contact Lumistar with your d1, d2, pressure, and ring material requirements.

Can the Type 76 fused sight glass be reused after removal?

Yesindeed, this is one of the key advantages over conventional glass discs. After removal, engineers can quickly clean the Type 76 and refit it in the same housing or relocate it to any compatible DIN 28121 assembly. In contrast, maintenance teams must replace conventional glass discs after each removal. Consequently, the Type 76 significantly reduces spare parts inventory costs and total cost of ownership over the life of the plant.

Is mica disc protection recommended for alkali or steam service?

Crucially, for process media containing strong alkalis, caustic soda or high-concentration condensates — and for any boiler water or steam service — we strongly recommend mica disc protection. Specifically, a mica shield sits between the glass surface and the process medium, ensuring the borosilicate glass never contacts the fluid directly. As a result, the assembly retains its full rated pressure and temperature while protecting the glass from chemical attack.
