Specifically, Lumiglas manufactures the Type 73 fused sight glass as a metal-fused borosilicate observation disc in strict conformance with DIN 7079 and DIN 7080. During production, our manufacturing process heats the borosilicate glass insert and the metal ring together until the glass flows against the ring surface. Next, the assembly undergoes controlled precision cooling. Consequently, this creates a mechanically prestressed unit which holds the glass insert in permanent compression. Ultimately, this glass-fused-to-metal construction gives the Type 73 its defining safety advantage over conventional thermally toughened sight glass discs, because it effectively eliminates the possibility of sudden, catastrophic rupture.

Furthermore, as a direct replacement for conventional glass discs, the LUMIGLAS® Type 73 fused sight glass fits standard DIN 28120 and DIN 28121 circular sight port housings, DIN 11851 screwed sight glass fittings, and a wide range of sight flow indicator assemblies. Generally, conventional thermally toughened sight glass discs can fail suddenly and without warning under pressure surges, thermal cycling or mechanical impact. In contrast, the metal-fused construction of the Type 73 completely eliminates this failure mode. What is a fused sight glass?

Fundamentally, a fused sight glass — also called a metal-fused sight glass or glass-fused-to-metal sight glass — represents a borosilicate observation disc that permanently bonds to a metal ring during manufacture per DIN 7079. What ring material should I choose for corrosive chemical service?

Typically, for aggressive acids and oxidising media, you should specify Hastelloy C-22 (2.4602). Alternatively, for chloride-rich or halogenated process environments, Hastelloy C-276 (2.4819) provides the highest corrosion resistance. Meanwhile, for general corrosive service and offshore applications, Duplex Stainless Steel (1.4462) remains the standard choice. Ultimately, simply provide your process medium details when enquiring and Lumistar will recommend the exact correct ring material.

What is the maximum pressure rating for the Type 73 fused sight glass?

Generally, we rate the standard Type 73 fused sight glass up to 64 bar — with the required glass thickness S depending directly on disc diameter d1. Furthermore, we can provide higher pressure ratings on request. Therefore, please contact Lumistar with your d1, d2 and operating pressure for a custom engineering calculation. You can also refer to the dimensional table above for standard sizes.

Can the fused sight glass be reused after removal?

Yesindeed, unlike conventional sight glass discs which operators must replace after each removal, maintenance teams can easily remove, clean and refit the LUMIGLAS® Type 73 fused sight glass in the same housing or relocate it to a different compatible DIN 28120 / DIN 28121 / DIN 11851 assembly. As a result, this reusability significantly reduces total cost of ownership and spare parts inventory requirements.

Is mica protection required for alkali or boiler water service?

Importantly, for process media containing strong alkalis, caustic soda or high-concentration condensates — and for any boiler water or steam service — we strongly recommend mica disc protection. Specifically, a mica shield sits between the glass surface and the process medium, which actively protects the borosilicate glass from direct chemical contact while maintaining the full rated pressure and temperature of the assembly.
